It’s not just a wish, but a hope and a dream and much more as well. I want to see slavery abolished.

With a estimated $31.6 billion in annual profits, the global trade in forced labour is alive and well. At any given time, 2.5 million people are in forced labour as a direct result of trafficking. And almost half of that number are affected by forced commercial sexual exploitation, with almost all being women and girls.

This means that slavery is still kicking. And half of the “slaves” are sexually exploited. Unfortunately, the face of the modern slave trade is young and female.

If that doesn’t cause you to cry, maybe the fact that for every 800 people trafficked, only one person was convicted in 2006. It’s horrible that these numbers are abysmal.

But there’s hope and you can help.

1. Be aware of the situation. Promote awareness among others.
2. Support organizations that work to eradicate this modern day slavery. Organizations like Love 146 (click here for more information) and the Not For Sale Campaign (click here for more information).
3. Volunteer at local organizations that help women. Organizations like Samaria House (click here for more information on this organization local to my community).

What organizations can you suggest?
